Did you know that smoking has an impact on your health and can affect your whole body? The number one cause of disease and death worldwide is smoking, which claims more than 480,000 American lives each year. Every day more than 3,800 children in the US under the age of eighteen smoke their first cigarette, not knowing the risks they are taking. Every year, around half a million Americans die at a young age due to smoking or secondhand smoke with another sixteen million living with a serious illness from smoking. In adults alone the US spends about 170 billion dollars each year on medical care for smoking related diseases. If people learned about the risks of smoking before they started, the rate of people that smoke and get smokingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦A child that has been in the womb while their mother was smoking may experience withdrawals after being born. They could also have trouble with learning or behavioral skills. Women are also increasing their risk of having a m iscarriage, premature or stillborn infants, ectopic pregnancy, or a cleft lip and palate in their child (National Institute on Drug Abuse) (Surgeon General). There are more than seven thousand chemicals in tobacco smoke. Of those seven thousand chemicals about seventy of them are known to cause cancer. Smoking can cause cancer in many different parts of the body including but not limited to, lungs, liver, pancreas, bladder, and stomach. The number one cause of lung cancer is smoking. Smoking is also known to cause leukemia (Effects of Smoking on Your Health). Approximately one out of every three cancer deaths is due to smoking. Smoking can also cause diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, macular degeneration, and multiple other symptoms (Surgeon General). Not only is a person who smokes putting themselves at risk but they are also putting others at risk. People that are near others that smoke are exposed to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke can come from the burning end of the cigarette or the person that is smoking when they exhale. Being exposed to secondhand smoke can also lead to lung cancer or heart disease.
